So look for double stitching and UV-resistant thread. And ask about the foam too.. Normal or standard upholstery foams can hold water like a sponge do. After one heavy downfall, cushions will smell bad and feel very heavy. It is also hard to dry properly. Quick-dry foam lets water pass through. If the seller can’t tell you what foam is inside, walk away. That’s my honest advice.

Table Edges and Feet Are Trouble Spots

Particleboard and MDF tabletops fail at the edges. Laminate can be damaged by water as one small scratch or a tiny banding can let the water in. The result will be swelling, peeling of the lamination and the table losing its strength. That is why solid wood, aluminium and specially made sealed marine plywood are better to use outdoors. 

The feet can be under water during heavy rain or when the floor gets cleaned with water. If they’re raw mild steel, they rust from the bottom up. Plastic caps can trap moisture against the metal and make it worse. I’ve seen this on furniture that was only six months old.

Look for aluminium or stainless steel feet with plastic glides. Adjustable feet are a bonus. They help level the furniture on uneven balconies, which reduces stress on the joints.

What Actually Holds Up Here

After years of watching furniture fail, my recommendations are pretty specific.

In a city like Kolkata, powder coated aluminium is the best choice to get the all round result. It can prevent corrosion and need no repainting. Few mild scratches can be fixed too, but the overall frame will not break down like mild steel. 

HDPE wicker is synthetic. Looks like rattan, but it doesn’t absorb water or develop mildew. A normal hose wash can do the job. 

Teak with FSC certified contains natural oils which prevent and save the wood from insects and water. It can last for years if proper treatment like cleaning and oiling can be done twice in a year. The maintenance is higher than usual aluminium or HDPE, but the result of getting a natural look is great compared to them. 

 If the need of better outdoor furniture is the focus, then cushions with solution-dyed acrylic is the standard, as its lasts longer with les fading of colour, faster drying and more mildew resistance than the normal polyester.

Powder-coated aluminium: The main risk is scratches exposing metal. Maintenance is a simple wipe down and touching up scratches. It’s good for frames, dining sets, and loungers.

HDPE wicker: Not much risk from moisture. Just hose it down. It’s perfect for sofa sets and balcony seating.

FSC-certified teak: Its surface can be dry or gray out. It also need maintenance like oiling once ina year or twice, and it goes well for a dinner table or benches. 

Marine-grade stainless steel: It is high priced but with no to minimum maintenance. It is best suited for high end frames and its materials. 

Solution-dyed acrylic fabric: Dirt and stains are the main issues. Brush off and wash occasionally. Best suited for upholstery and cushions.

I get why people hesitate before spending more. The first bill is higher. But the honest comparison is cost per year of usable life.

A cheap mild steel chair set might look like a bargain. The annual costs can be higher if the screws rusts and the whole set needs to be replaced after only a year or two. Now powder coated aluminium may cost higher now, but it can save a lot of money if you provide it with minimal maintenance.  

Maintenance adds up too. Low cost furniture often needs repainting, removal of rust, or new cushions installation. But in the case of aluminium and HDPE wicker, a simple wiping and an occasional wash is all that is needed to keep them well for years.
